Summer weddings have their own sense of magic to them. The bright, warm sunshine (hopefully!), filled with excitement and anticipation, give way to long balmy evenings, illuminated by candlelight and dancing.
When it comes to enhancing your wedding space and contributing to the atmosphere, floral design plays a huge part. With this, also comes some practical point to ensure your floral design works for the space, as well as the potential of extreme weather. Where does one start?
At the beginning. Your space.
Where are you marrying? Will plan A be outside or inside? If outside, make sure your wet weather plan translates from the outdoor option to the indoor option in terms of set up and the floral design. It might need tweaking but your professionals should pick up on this.
With an outdoor space, it's important to pay attention to extreme heat, not just for your floral design, but also for the comfort of you and your guests. They will be out there longer than you, so if temperatures are reaching late 20s/early 30 degrees Celsius, think about shade, where guests can rest in the first instance before being seated at the last moment for the ceremony, as well as hydration and maybe even a fan or two!
As for your flowers, in extreme heat, your floral designer will hopefully direct you to suitable arrangements with mechanics that will allow flowers to drink for the day. Flowers do much better in fresh water, and ensuring there is a space where they are more in the shade with do them the world of good too - although appreciate that this might not always be possible.

In terms of flower choices, heres our top list of favourites for the season. As a general rule, those flowers with thinner, softer green stems will potentially struggle in the heat, but your floral designer will make recommendations on how to negate potential issues around this and their mechanics will hopefully offer support to the flowers too.
Dahlias - they come in so many varieties, colours and styles, they are super versatile! They can be a bit dramatic, and floral designers know only too well how they can struggle in the heat, but for an average temperature kinda day, they will flourish!
Delphiniums - they bring the height and the drama. They come in 4 main colours, in a variety of hues and elevate floral design beautifully.
Sweet Peas & Jasmine - their scent is hard to rival, and when cut on tendrils, provide a beautiful, flowing feel to arrangements.
Roses - this may seem like an obvious one, but there are so many beautiful and luxurious varieties, such as the David Austin range, that choosing special ones, really make a statement arrangement sing.
Hydrangea - another perhaps "basic" choice, but these large headed flowers provide a beautiful focal flower in arrangements either on their own, grouped together or as a single stem. They can be used in so many different ways; they are versatile and forgiving. They can be a little dramatic if they're not kept hydrated properly, so at TBP, we always put them into a water source to keep them happy.

Finally, adding trinkets and things to elevate your styling.
This part is often overlooked, but is arguably some of the most important things to ensure your design is cohesive and creates the atmosphere you desire. It also applies to weddings all year round, but in the summer, they seem to hit different! It could include things such as draping (see Mia Sylviaa, Textile Artist on IG) or streamers (see Streamdelica on IG) to bring drama and texture at a height; perhaps table linens and napkins could be something other than white to tie your design together or make a bold impact in terms of colour; candlelight, chandeliers (see Crescent Moon Events on IG) or other lighting and production could add to the ambiance of the room.
However you decide to style your wedding day, ensure it reflects you both as a couple, and that you are making the most of your investment that you set aside for this aspect. Using floral design to create a space and make it feel special will leave a lasting impact on you and your guests, as well as offering beautiful images for you all to look back on for years to come.
